Pea sprouts are delicious raw or cooked. They can be sprinkled
on salads and added to soups. In addition, they can be steamed, stir fried or
oven roasted with other leguminous sprouts. . They are rich sources of vitamins
A, B, C and E, all the essential amino acids, the minerals calcium, iron and phosphorus.
They contain 26% protein.
Green Pea One of the first food crops ever to be cultivated, "Garden Peas"
probably originated in the Mediterranean region and Western Asia. High in fiber,
protein and carbohydrates, iron, potassium, vitamin A, thiamine and riboflavin,
peas provide excellent nutrition at a very low cost. They can be grown in dark
or light. When grown completely in the dark, the sprouts have the look and taste
of thin yellow asparagus.
It is a purple flowered pea used predominantly for the pigeon trade. Minerva is
also a useful component in arable silage mixtures. Maple Peas are less common
than other varieties which often makes them a very valuable commodity. SWIFT -
This new semi-leafless maple pea yields higher and is easier to harvest than existing
varieties. With all the new varieties of pigeon peas coming on to the market we
are delighted that the pigeon trade is very excited about Swift, which is already
in great demand.
Maple peas are round to angular in shape, and are medium sized. They have a marbled
seed coat and are well suited to the birdseed market.

The average weight of pea seed is about 200mg, with the seed coat making up about
12% of the total. Most of the peas produced in Australia are of the Dun type,
round dimpled seed ranging in colour from greenish brown to brown. Dry round seed
harvested after maturity may be used for food purposes, for example as whole,
dry seed, dehulled and split seed. Seeds of dry peas used for soups, sprouting
and can be used to make tempe. They are also known as: Dry peas, feed peas, arveja
and matar. |
